Google has completed another major step in its transition from traditional voice assistants to generative AI, with Gemini now replacing Google Assistant for Android Auto users.
The change means users can no longer switch back to Google Assistant once the transition reaches their device. Google has removed the option from its settings, making Gemini the default voice assistant across Android phones and Android Auto.
The transition has been underway for some time, but Google had previously allowed users to continue using Assistant while Gemini was gradually introduced. The final phase-out began in early September, with the company warning that availability would disappear progressively over several weeks.
For the automotive experience, the change represents much more than a new assistant interface. Gemini is designed around natural, conversational interactions, potentially allowing drivers to make more complex requests and continue conversations without repeatedly issuing rigid voice commands.
However, the transition has not been seamless. Some Android Auto users have reported problems with basic assistant functions, including making calls and sending messages—tasks that Google Assistant had handled for years. This creates an important challenge for Google as Gemini becomes the only available option for Android Auto users.
Google Assistant has not disappeared from every automotive environment yet. It remains available on Android Automotive OS, although Google also plans to transition those embedded systems toward Gemini.
The move marks an important turning point for the connected-car ecosystem. Voice assistants are evolving from command-based interfaces into AI-powered conversational layers, capable of eventually connecting navigation, communications, entertainment and vehicle services through a single interaction model.
For Android Auto, Gemini is no longer an experimental alternative to Google Assistant. It is now the platform’s primary AI interface between the driver and their digital services.
