LG Electronics is expanding its automotive ambitions beyond infotainment through a collaboration with Nvidia aimed at developing a new generation of AI-defined vehicles (AIDVs). The partnership brings together LG’s established cockpit and automotive software capabilities with Nvidia’s high-performance vehicle computing technology.
LG disclosed the collaboration in its latest semi-annual report, marking the first time the company has formally acknowledged its automotive work with Nvidia in a regulatory filing. The companies are currently reviewing technologies and establishing a development environment for a next-generation high-performance computing platform.
At the center of the project is Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion platform. LG intends to combine the technology with its own infotainment products and automotive software to develop a centralized computing architecture capable of supporting increasingly sophisticated AI functions inside the vehicle.
The strategy represents a significant expansion for LG’s Vehicle Solution business. The company has traditionally built its automotive presence around telematics, navigation, displays and in-vehicle infotainment, but now sees AI and automated driving as additional growth opportunities.
Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion platform uses Drive AGX Thor computing based on the company’s Blackwell architecture and is designed to support highly automated driving. Combining this computing foundation with LG’s cockpit technologies could eventually allow the same vehicle architecture to support both driving intelligence and increasingly advanced passenger experiences.
The collaboration also fits LG’s broader vision of the vehicle as a “living space on wheels.” As automated driving develops, the company sees opportunities to provide global automakers with solutions combining autonomous capabilities, AI services and digital cockpit experiences rather than treating each area as a separate system.
For the connected-car industry, the partnership illustrates how the evolution from the software-defined vehicle to the AI-defined vehicle could reshape the technology stack. The cockpit, AI assistant, infotainment services and driving systems are increasingly likely to share centralized computing resources — creating new opportunities for automotive apps and services that can respond more intelligently to both the vehicle and its occupants.
