Spotify is taking another step into the automotive market with the launch of its first fully native in-car application, debuting in select Audi vehicles. Announced on October 21, 2026, the new app runs directly on Android Automotive OS, allowing drivers to access Spotify without connecting their smartphones through Bluetooth, USB or phone projection.
Unlike Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which rely on a connected smartphone, the new Spotify experience is integrated into the vehicle’s infotainment system. Developed in collaboration with Audi and Volkswagen Group software company CARIAD, the application features a dedicated interface designed specifically for automotive displays, with personalized recommendations, familiar navigation menus and integration with the vehicle’s controls.
One of the biggest changes is the simplified listening experience. After signing in once using a QR code or pairing code, drivers can automatically resume playback when entering their vehicle. Hands-free controls are supported through Audi’s built-in voice assistant, while Spotify DJ allows users to request personalized music selections without navigating the touchscreen.
The app also introduces Spotify Jam, music videos, video podcasts and real-time lyrics, expanding the range of entertainment available inside the vehicle. Passengers can join shared listening sessions by scanning a QR code and contributing songs to a collaborative queue. In vehicles equipped with a dedicated passenger display, occupants can also browse content and watch videos while travelling.
To minimize driver distraction, Spotify automatically adjusts its interface depending on whether the vehicle is moving or parked. Music videos and lyrics are restricted on the central display while driving, with voice commands and simplified playback controls taking priority. When stationary, including during electric vehicle charging sessions, the full entertainment experience becomes accessible through the main screen.
The application is initially available through the Audi Application Store in 47 markets, supporting the Audi A5, Q5 and A6 from model year 2026, alongside the electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron. Audi’s upcoming Q7 and Q9 models will also support the experience. The app is available to Spotify Free and Premium subscribers, although vehicle connectivity requirements may vary.
Spotify plans to expand its native automotive experience to additional manufacturers over the coming year. The launch highlights a broader industry transition toward embedded applications, as automakers increasingly position their infotainment systems as independent digital platforms rather than extensions of smartphones.
