Google Opens Android Auto and Android Automotive to More Game Developers

0

Google is expanding the entertainment potential of the connected car by moving the games category for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS out of beta and into general availability. The change opens in-car gaming to a much wider community of Android developers.

Developers can now publish compatible games through Google Play’s open testing and production tracks, rather than relying on Google’s previous early-access program. For existing Android game publishers, bringing a title into the car primarily involves adapting it to automotive displays and meeting Google’s specific technical and safety requirements.

Gaming remains strictly a parked experience. Games cannot be launched or used while the vehicle is moving, and any game audio must stop once driving begins. Google sees charging stops, curbside pickups and other periods of downtime as natural opportunities for drivers and passengers to use the vehicle’s larger infotainment screen.

The experience spans both of Google’s automotive platforms. Android Auto can project compatible games from smartphones running Android 15 or later, while vehicles equipped with Android Automotive OS with Google built-in can offer games directly through their embedded infotainment environment.

Google is also encouraging developers to support touchscreens and connected game controllers, while ensuring their titles adapt properly to the wide variety of portrait, landscape and ultra-wide displays now appearing across vehicle interiors.

Another requirement is continuity. When a journey interrupts gameplay, compatible titles should restore the previous state as closely as possible when reopened, turning short periods spent inside a parked vehicle into a more practical gaming session rather than forcing players to restart.

The move is significant for the broader automotive app ecosystem. By opening another mainstream Android app category to cars, Google is making the infotainment screen an increasingly attractive distribution channel for developers while expanding the role of the vehicle beyond navigation and audio into a broader digital entertainment platform.
