Mercedes-Benz brings immersive 3D audio to latest MBUX systems

0

Mercedes-Benz is introducing advanced 3D audio technology across vehicles equipped with the latest generation of its MBUX infotainment system, enhancing the in-car entertainment experience with spatial sound capabilities.

Developed in collaboration with Fraunhofer IDMT and audio specialist Burmester, the technology converts standard stereo content into a multi-dimensional sound environment, creating a more immersive listening experience. The feature is currently available in models including the CLA, GLC, GLB and S-Class, with further rollout planned across additional vehicles.

The system is offered in vehicles fitted with premium and high-end Burmester sound systems, as well as those running the newest MBUX platform. Drivers can adjust the intensity of the spatial effect through dedicated controls, ranging from subtle enhancement to a more pronounced surround experience.

Fraunhofer IDMT worked with Mercedes-Benz to optimise the technology for automotive use, addressing constraints such as processing power, system integration and in-vehicle acoustics. The solution was first introduced in 2025 with the fully electric CLA.

The research institute has also rebranded its SpatialSound Wave technology as “Audiofields”, reflecting ongoing development of new use cases, including directional audio alerts and more precise placement of sound within the vehicle cabin.

According to Fraunhofer IDMT, the goal is to transform in-car audio into a high-quality, immersive experience, comparable to live music environments, while maintaining clarity and control for everyday driving.
