Volvo Cars has begun deploying one of the largest over-the-air software updates in the automotive industry, introducing a redesigned infotainment interface to around 2.5 million vehicles across 85 countries.
The update introduces Volvo Car UX, a new user experience designed to simplify interaction with the vehicle’s central display. The redesigned layout aims to make commonly used functions easier to access while reducing the number of taps required to navigate between features. The upgrade will be delivered free of charge to eligible vehicles equipped with Android Automotive OS and Google built-in, including models produced as early as 2020.
According to Volvo, the refreshed interface focuses on the features drivers use most frequently. Core functions such as navigation, media and phone controls are now accessible directly from the home screen, allowing drivers to manage tasks without switching between apps—for example adjusting music while using Google Maps.
The update also introduces a contextual bar that adapts to driving conditions and highlights recently used apps. Additional features include easier access to drive modes for plug-in hybrid vehicles, making it simpler for drivers to switch to electric-only operation.
By standardising the new interface across a wide range of models—from vehicles such as the XC40 to newer models like the EX90—Volvo aims to deliver a consistent digital experience throughout its lineup. The update also prepares compatible vehicles for future integration with Google Gemini, which the company plans to introduce later in the year.
The rollout reflects Volvo’s strategy of continuously improving vehicles through software updates, enabling new features and performance enhancements long after the car has been delivered.
