Google to open-source AAOS-based SDV platform for automakers

0

Google is preparing to open-source a new software platform based on Android Automotive OS, aimed at supporting the development of software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The initiative, developed in collaboration with partners including Renault Group and Qualcomm, is expected to be released later in 2026.

The new platform, referred to as AAOS SDV, builds on Google’s existing Android Automotive OS by extending its scope beyond infotainment to cover a wider portion of the in-vehicle software stack. It is designed to provide a shared, open infrastructure for non-safety-critical systems, addressing the complexity that arises when automakers integrate multiple software components from different suppliers and architectures.

By standardising this layer, Google aims to help manufacturers reduce development overhead and shift their focus toward differentiated features and user experiences. The company also positions the platform as a way to streamline software integration and accelerate the rollout of over-the-air updates across vehicle fleets.

Android Automotive OS is already deployed across numerous vehicle brands to power in-car applications and infotainment services. With the introduction of AAOS SDV, Google is seeking to bring greater consistency to vehicle software environments while supporting the broader transition toward software-defined mobility.
