Honda and Nissan are taking their software collaboration a major step further, agreeing to jointly develop standardized electronic control units and software architecture for software-defined vehicles. The technology is expected to reach next-generation production vehicles from the 2029 financial year onward.
The two Japanese automakers plan to establish common specifications for the core ECUs underpinning their electrical and electronic architectures. Their cooperation will also extend into vehicle operating systems, middleware and parts of the software responsible for controlling vehicle functions.
The strategy addresses one of the biggest challenges facing traditional automakers as vehicles become increasingly software-driven. Developing proprietary operating systems and electronic architectures capable of supporting connected services, driver assistance, entertainment and over-the-air updates requires significant investment and engineering resources.
By sharing some of this underlying technology, Honda and Nissan could reduce duplication while creating a more standardized foundation on which each company can develop its own digital experiences and vehicle services. The collaboration builds on discussions launched in 2024 around next-generation automotive software platforms.
The partnership also comes as Japanese manufacturers face growing competition from Chinese automakers such as BYD, whose electric and hybrid vehicles increasingly combine competitive pricing with sophisticated connected and software features, particularly in markets such as Europe and Southeast Asia.
The alliance could expand further. Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan’s alliance partner, is considering joining Honda and Nissan and remains in discussions about potential areas of cooperation.
For the automotive app ecosystem, the move is significant. Greater standardization at the ECU, OS and middleware levels could eventually provide a more consistent technical foundation for infotainment, connected services and other software-driven experiences across multiple brands — making the underlying software architecture an increasingly strategic part of the battle for the digital cockpit.
