Kia is expanding the role of artificial intelligence inside its vehicles with the introduction of a new generative AI-powered voice assistant in the Sorento, launched in India. Developed with SoundHound AI, the system marks the global debut of Kia’s AI Assistant with Real-Time Generative AI for the Sorento lineup, bringing more natural conversations and intelligent vehicle control directly into the cabin.
Activated through the “Hey Kia” wake-up command, the assistant combines SoundHound’s voice recognition technology with generative AI to support continuous, multi-turn conversations. Rather than relying on predefined commands, drivers can communicate naturally with the vehicle, ask follow-up questions and make more complex requests without restarting the interaction.
One of the system’s main capabilities is its integration with in-cabin vehicle functions. Drivers can use everyday speech to adjust climate settings, cabin lighting, windows and driving modes. This approach aims to reduce the need to navigate touchscreen menus or remember specific voice commands, making vehicle interaction more intuitive.
Beyond controlling the cabin, the assistant also serves as an intelligent vehicle guide. By accessing information from the digital owner’s manual, it can answer questions about the Sorento’s features, explain hybrid powertrain functions and provide guidance on specialized seating configurations. This transforms traditional vehicle documentation into an interactive, hands-free experience.
The platform also supports real-time information and contextual search, including local points of interest, navigation assistance, news updates and general questions. SoundHound says the system is designed to maintain recognition accuracy even in noisy cabin environments, an important requirement for conversational AI in moving vehicles.
For SoundHound AI, the deployment represents another step in expanding its automotive technology across international markets, particularly India. The partnership also illustrates how automakers are increasingly working with specialized AI providers to integrate advanced conversational capabilities into their infotainment ecosystems.
The Sorento’s new assistant reflects a broader transition in automotive HMI, where voice is evolving from a command-based feature into a conversational interface. As generative AI becomes more deeply integrated with vehicle systems, digital assistants could become an increasingly important gateway to navigation, connected services, vehicle information and personalized in-car experiences.
