NXP Packs Radio and AI Audio Into a Single Automotive Chip

0

NXP Semiconductors is simplifying next-generation vehicle infotainment with the SAF9800, a new automotive processor that combines analog radio reception and AI/ML-powered audio processing on a single chip. The architecture is designed for software-defined vehicles and could help automakers reduce both system complexity and component count.

The 9 × 9 mm processor integrates AM/FM reception with a 600MHz HiFi 5 digital signal processor equipped with neural-network acceleration. Traditionally handled by separate components, these functions can now operate within a single scalable platform, helping reduce footprint and power requirements.

AI plays a particularly important role. The SAF9800 can use acoustic source separation to distinguish voice commands, emergency sirens, mechanical sounds and other audio sources from background noise. NXP says its additional processing capabilities can support real-time noise reduction, sound classification and improved voice recognition.

The chip is also designed around software-defined functionality. Automakers can configure single- or dual-tuner setups through software and use common hardware across different vehicle segments, potentially enabling features to be differentiated or upgraded without redesigning the underlying electronics.

Another focus is maintaining reliable traditional radio reception as vehicle architectures evolve. NXP’s EVAM-lite technology is designed to mitigate AM interference caused by electrical noise from EV powertrains, an increasingly relevant challenge as manufacturers electrify their fleets while facing varying broadcast-radio requirements across markets.

By bringing radio, advanced audio and AI acceleration together, the SAF9800 illustrates how semiconductor suppliers are consolidating previously separate infotainment functions as the automotive industry moves toward more centralized, software-configurable vehicle architectures.
