Volvo Cars has introduced the Volvo EX60, a new fully electric mid-size SUV equipped with Gemini, marking the first time the company has launched a vehicle designed from the outset with Google’s latest AI technology.
The system allows drivers to interact with the car through natural voice commands, enabling hands-free control of vehicle functions and personalised assistance. By integrating with various onboard systems, the assistant can help drivers perform tasks such as retrieving information from emails, planning trips or checking practical details like whether an item will fit in the vehicle’s boot.
At the core of the EX60 is HuginCore, Volvo’s new hardware and software architecture, which combines the automaker’s in-house technologies with systems developed by major technology partners including Google, Nvidia and Qualcomm. The vehicle is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit Platform and connectivity solutions, while advanced computing is handled by Nvidia’s Drive AGX Orin platform.
The EX60 also incorporates a range of sensors and driver-assistance technologies designed to improve safety by continuously monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings. These systems support advanced driver assistance features that help detect hazards and assist the driver in real time.
Like many next-generation connected vehicles, the EX60 will receive regular over-the-air software updates. Built on Volvo’s Superset technology stack, the platform allows the car’s capabilities to evolve over time, with future updates expected to expand Gemini’s role—potentially enabling the AI to analyse visual data from the car’s cameras and provide contextual information to passengers.
